Consultation on proposed changes to our admission policy from September 2023 onwards

‘Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all that you do’ (1 Corinthians 16:14)
      • We value and respect every member of our school community as a unique child of God.
      • Each child is nurtured, supported and challenged to reach their full potential.
      • Our values of kindness, trust and perseverance underpin our curriculum through rich and varied enquiry led experiences.

As a Church of England / Methodist Aided school, our governing body are our admissions authority. As such, they are required to review our admissions policy annually in line with current legislation and guidance. Where significant changes are proposed, we consult locally as widely as possible to hear the views of all who could be affected.

Our status as a church school has never been more important to us and strongly shapes our vision and direction.  As a church school, everything we do is underpinned by love and kindness and by our Christian values of kindness, perseverance and trust. Whilst we have previously included church attendance in our admission criteria, our passion has always been to be here for, and reach out to, our whole community regardless of religion and belief.

Our new proposed policy includes clarification on Children in Care, Special Educational Needs, twins and multiple births, education out of chronological age groups, part time attendance, Fair Access Protocols and in year admissions. The reason for this consultation is the proposal to remove the church attendance criteria from our admissions policy.

In making the decision to consult on the removal of our church attendance criteria, we have been guided by the Equality Act, the Department for Education School Admissions Code, and protocols issued by the Derby Diocesan Board of Education.

      • The Education School Admissions Code (December 2010) states, 'Oversubscription criteria must be reasonable, clear, objective, procedurally fair, and comply with all relevant legislation, including equalities legislation. Admission authorities must ensure that their arrangements will not disadvantage unfairly, either directly or indirectly, a child from a particular social or racial group.'
      • The Equalities Act (2010) states that it is unlawful to, 'discriminate against another if, because of a protected characteristic, A treats B less favourably than A treats or would treat others.' Religion or belief are included in the nine protected characteristics.
      • The Derby Diocese have advised, 'The [admissions] code requires that schools must have regard to any guidance set by the diocese. For the sake of clarity, the diocese state that: Church of England schools in the diocese should not set faith-based or church attendance as a criteria. Admitting authorities should have regard to this advice when setting their policies In exceptional circumstances and only with the prior consent of the Diocesan Board of Education, a governing body may use faith-based criteria.'

In this light of this legislation, guidance and advice, we are now proposing the removal of the faith-based criteria from our admissions policy from September 2023. We do not believe that this will undermine the outstanding Christian distinctiveness of our church school. Indeed, we believe that this underscores our passion to be here to meet the needs of all with love and kindness. We do, however, recognise that this proposed change will have an impact upon some families and groups, and we are keen to hear the views of as many members of our community as possible.
