Our curriculum teaches the children the fundamental skills through games and activities planned by their class teacher according to the children’s needs. Our children are encourage to use a wide variety of objects and equipment of different sizes, textures and shapes. Children are taught these fundamental skills that the children can use and apply in traditional and non-traditional games.

What are Fundamental Movement Skills?

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are movement patterns that involve different body parts such as the legs, arms, trunk and head, and include such skills as running, hopping, catching, throwing, striking and balancing. They are the foundation movements or precursor patterns to the more specialised, complex skills used in play, games, sports, dance, gymnastics, outdoor education and physical recreation activities.

At St Andrew's some year groups use REAL PE to support the teaching of the fundamental skills.

What is Real PE?

Real PE provides fun and simple to follow Schemes of Work and support for practitioners to give them the confidence and skills to deliver outstanding PE.

It is fully aligned to the National Curriculum and Ofsted requirements and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning through a unique and market leading approach to teaching and learning in PE.

Real PE is a unique, child-centred approach. It transforms how we teach PE to engage and challenge EVERY child in primary school.

Our PE values

At St Andrews, when teaching PE, we also teach the children about the six school games values and promote them within our lessons.  On Sports day they are also at the heart of our event. We don’t just celebrate the winners of the races, we also celebrate and reward children who demonstrate these six values throughout the day. The children are given points when showing these values which are then added to their house points. This encourages children that winning is not the most important thing.
