 Statement of Intent

Music

Singing, Listening, Composing and Performance

Purpose of Study

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high- quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and listen to a wide range of music.

At Our School:

The St. Andrew’s Musician can use their voice and instruments creatively and expressively with increasing accuracy and fluency. They can listen to a range of high-quality music and musical styles with attention to detail and discuss and critique what they hear, with reference to the various dimensions of music. They can compose, in isolation and in collaboration, and perform confidently in front of an audience. They have a strong understanding of music across history, genres, styles and traditions.

St. Andrew’s Rationale

  • Objectives across all strands of music revisited and embedded within and across year groups and key stages to ensure cumulative fluency;
  • Repeated exposure to a wide range of high-quality music, across a range of eras, genres, styles and traditions, to ensure a broad musical education;
  • Development in all aspects of music to encourage creativity and self-confidence as a musician.

How Music is taught:

At St. Andrew's we teach music though the Charanga Programme. This includes listening to and appreciating music, simple composition and opportunities to perform.  We are fortunate to have a range of percussion instruments including class sets of Glockenspiels and recorders, which the children enjoy using to facilitate their understanding of music.

Alongside this, Key stage 1 children are involved in a Christmas performance each year. In key stage 2 the children are involved in either a Christmas carol concert or performance and a summer concert.

Singing worship takes place weekly as a whole school and children learn new hymns and songs relating to our Christian values.
